New Year's Eve

For New Year's Eve, I like to dress up, eat a good dinner, and drink fancy cocktails and champagne.  This is an expensive business if you're heading out somewhere - probably a black tie ball at a hotel or similar - and it ends up being incredibly pricey and one feels that one simply has to enjoy it.  So, until my husband and I can afford to attend a New Year's Eve party on Burgh Island or similar, we do the next best thing - dress up and stay in!  I can take my time getting ready, and change my mind several times about what to wear.  The chef is understanding if I'm late.  I don't have to worry about a change of shoes because of heels I can't walk in.  We have an incredibly well-stocked bar in our kitchen cabinets, the bartenders are generous with their measures, and there are no queues for anything.  We had a splendid time!

Shoes: Miss Selfridge, brand new from car boot sale (£1)

Bit of a bargain outfit, total cost £16!

Start the year as you mean to go on, eh?  With glamour!  The neighbours thoughtfully put on a fireworks display for us at the stroke of midnight, which was another lovely bonus of staying in to celebrate.

The dress is really lovely on, it's a heavy jersey with a velvet band under the bust that then forms a train at the back.  It was really hard to photograph in our dimly lit living room (and after a few cocktails!), so you'll have to take my word for it.  The necklace was a purchase last summer, and I had been saving it for a special occasion (taking out now and again to wear whilst doing the dishes...).  It really does sparkle wonderfully, which we tried to capture in those slightly blurry arty close-ups.

That's the end of the festive outfit posts, we've taken all the decorations down now, eaten all of the chocolate, and it's back to work tomorrow for me.  After over two weeks off I'm going to miss my lie-ins...

  1. Very Glamorous! It all seems like a distant dream, January is one of our busiest times at work so I hit the ground running on Tuesday and haven't stopped!

  3. You look a million dollars for that £16. Probably a lot more fun than going out - you could just relax and enjoy yourselves, whereas going out always make me feel pressured. We stayed in and watched Jools Holland!

  4. You are both looking very glamorous, and you're absolutely right to stay in: going out on New Year's Eve is overrated (and far too pricey) anyway. xxx

  6. I find it so adorable that you are always dressing up to stay in - and wish I could persuade my other half but he just thinks I'm bonkers every time I suggest it. Why am I marrying him again?? We stayed in too this year, but I didn't look half as glamorous! xx

  9. You both look fantastic. And I love that you dress up even to stay in. Girl after my own heart. You can always find a reason to dress up as far as I'm concerned! Your outfit looks like it cost a 1000 times the price you paid for it. Love the vintage crystal necklace and those red shoes. Great finds.

    Happy New Year:)

  11. First of all, you both look fantastic - and way to go too for a night in, love it! Those cocktails look delicious and I'm sure it must have been even better not to have to brave the cold for them and then be able to stumble into bed at the end of the night without having to wait in line for hours to get a taxi. I also had a nice night in with my husband for NY, although we were in our pajamas eating Thai food so not quite as glam ;) :P Happy New Year!

  16. Happy New Year Porcelina! You look so glamorous and it looks as though you had a lovely time! I don't usually go out on New Year's either- sometimes I host a party, and some years just end up staying in- although not as sparklingly decked out as you :)
