Collectif Olive Dress at the Marble Hall

Cardiff's beautiful City Hall is an Edwardian triumph.  We were lucky enough to get married there, and still return for events throughout the year.  Every few months there's a vintage fair, and on our last visit to one, we also took the time to visit the Marble Hall.  Upstairs in the building, this beautiful space is lined by marble columns mounted in bronze.  There's an art collection on display, including fine paintings, and a series of sculptures.  Stained glass windows are the finishing touch.

Spring might be almost here, but it was a cold and wet day, and I was wearing my much-loved 'Olive' dress by Collectif to stay cosy.  It's a super-stretchy knit, and seems to have kept its shape through repeated washing and wearing.  There's a bit of bobbling developing, but that's a minor thing and easily fixed.  The neck isn't a very high rollneck, it sits quite low, so it doesn't feel as constricting as some rollnecks do.  My only gripe would be that as the knit is fairly thin, you do have to really think about shapewear underneath.  In these photos I'm not wearing shapewear, just a slip underneath for warmth, and I think it looks a bit lumpy in retrospect.

Collectif are still running their sale, and at the time of writing this the Olive dress is now reduced to £21.50 from £62, and is also available in black and burgundy.  I bought the burgundy one too when it was reduced to £30.  I always stock up on things I like slightly out of season to get the deals!  What about you, do you strictly shop for each season as it rolls around, or are you a hoarder like me who buys sundresses in winter?

  1. Looking gorgeous! This is what I wish this dress would like on me, but we both know it would be ankle length!! I still look at it longingly every now and then though... xx

  2. I think you look fab, shapewear or no. (I'm seriously considering giving it a go myself.)

I buy whenever something strikes me. If I *really* want something I'll pay full price, otherwise I'll wait for the sales for high-street stuff or the cheaper repro brands. Sometimes I get lucky and by the time I've made up my mind to buy something the sales have rolled round and I get it for less anyhow. Weirdly, this year virtually nothing is grabbing me... the high street brands aren't doing prints I like, and the repro brands aren't lighting my fire either. Guess I'd better go to a few vintage fairs and hunt down clothes in the wild.

    1. I've not been grabbed that much either Mim, I think I'm getting fussy in my old age! I'm sure there's a fabulous vintage piece out there with your name on ;)

  4. What a fabulous look! I really like those shots of you in between the pillars, the framing is really nice. You look very film noir in these, which suits you beautifully. This dress seems like a great find, especially if it's keeping its shape well, so good on you for picking it up in another color. And I think your shape looks fine, shapewear or no.
I used to be terrible about shopping ahead when the sales are going on, but this year I did pick up a couple of nice spring/summer dresses and shoes that are waiting patiently in my closet. I always want to wear new things as soon as I get them, so that's been tough!

    1. Why thank you, my husband was feeling arty, he'll be pleased his photography is appreciated! It is hard waiting to wear something - I usually pack it away in the attic, promptly forget I have it, and then get delighted on rediscovering it!

  5. That dress looks lovely on you, even without shapewear! I really love your hair in these photos too. And what a fabulous location! Buying vintage almost exclusively, I often buy things out of season, down to buying a winter coat during a heatwave! xxx

  8. Isn't amazing how grand our municipal buildings once were? No chance of that these days, all our councils are on the verge of bankruptcy! Fabulous setting and suitably swanky for your glamorous outfit.
I buy stuff when I see it - as it's all secondhand/vintage you've got to or some other bugger will get in there first! xxx

    1. I do tend to buy vintage/secondhand straight away, I guess I dither with new purchases as I don't want to spend so much money!!

  10. Beautiful hall, great dress, but those boots are extra gorgeous! I thought I had scored a stunning coat from Collectif in the sales this year but then they emailed me the next day saying they pulled them all due to a manufacturing error and canceled my order, I was so bummed as it was such a gorgeous coat! Oh well, better luck next sale right?

  11. I love this dress and colour on you.

    What a spectacular doorway!

I think my all time favourite are those boots of yours though. One of these days I'll stumble across some while thrifting or vintage shopping.

I'm like Vix, I buy whatever whenever if I love it as I'm also a thrifter.

  14. I love this dress. I've overlooked it on the Collectif site previously as I don't have the figure for things this fitted, but it looks so great on you, even without shapewear!

  15. Lovely dress- and I like how you paired it with your gorgeous boots too! I always buy whenever I find something I like- I always know that it will be in season again eventually. The hardest part is waiting to wear it, when it is out of season ;)

  18. It pains me that we don't have anything like this in Australia - not sure what happened but I guess it was too hot for architects to bother with creating masterpieces? I really love your use of angles with these photos and the shots of you standing between the columns, fantastic photos!

  19. I have heard such great things about this dress. And it does look so cosy being knitted, very flattering too. So nice that there are events in the venue that you got married in, very sweet to re visit it.
