Bracing Barry in Berry

We went to Barry.  It was bracing.  I wore berry.

These photos were taken on the posh side of Barry, The Knap.  Some of the homes overlooking the water are rather impressive, a real mix of 1930s houses, modern grand-designs types, and even an an old thatched cottage.  There are remnants of the old 1926 lido there too, that was unfortunately closed and filled-in, so it's now a sort of barren garden.  A shame.  That would have been a fabulous blog outfit location.  (For non-europeans, a lido is a public outdoor swimming pool, and they were built across the UK in the 1920s and 1930s, often in a rather fabulous deco style).

We visited the town centre after we took these photos.  It was a fruitless charity shop trawl for me - I didn't buy a single thing for myself - though I did buy a jacket that my husband liked, which I will put away for Christmas for him.

If it looks blustery in these photos, it's because it was exceptionally windy!  Every other photo turned out with my hair plastered across my face.

1960s' suede coat from husband, 1960s dress from charity shop, vintage necklace from charity shop, vintage headscarf from car boot sale, sunglasses from charity shop, M&S tights from outlet, Sendra boots from charity shop.

So many lidos have closed around the UK, are you lucky enough to have an open one near you?  Here in South Wales they've refurbished the Pontypridd Lido, and I'm yet to visit it - they do a Boxing Day swim, which sounds tempting!

  1. I can’t say I’ve ever found the idea of a Boxing Day swim tempting...! Love this outfit - these colours look so good on you and that coat is fantastic! You were a good woman for persevering through the wind, I just tend to have a tantrum and give up ;) xx

    1. Yes well Chris has just given a firm 'no' to a Boxing Day swim this year, so you're not alone in that opinion! Honestly the wind was SO bad, I did nearly give-up, and thought about photoshopping a paper bag on my head in these photos... xx

  2. Such a shame that Lido closed down and was filled in. I love your blog outfit location, though. There's something about the seaside this time of year. You are looking fabulous in your berry outfit too. I love that 1960s shift and that sued coat is just stunning! xxx

  3. So mod 60's! What a great outfit. I'd happily wear all of it.

Great photos too considering you were battling against the wind.

I had to look up what a lido was : )

  5. You look fabulous! Love the Barry/berry thing, that's too fun, and I love the 60s and 70s inspiration you played with here. That coat in particular is divine.
And on to the part where I look dumb... what's a lido?

    1. Ha, Barry/berry was due to lack of inspiration of what else to write!
I've just realised 'lido' is a European term, sorry, have updated the post with a description xx

  7. I used to love going to Barry Island when I was a kid, it was just close enough to go there and back in a day from where we lived. Of course, it was a bit more rickety back then, none of this health and safety nonsense! :)
I love your coat, it reminds me of my mum's teal green suede coat that she had made especially for her in the 60s. I've had so many offers to buy it off me but I will never let that coat go! xx

  8. All these shades of berry, burgundy and russet look so fabulous on you - each one of those differed shades seem to suit you and somehow they all work brilliantly together! Just fabulous! Kx

What a bracing trip out. I can't think of Barry Island without hearing Nessa saying "What's Occurring?" Love her! xxx

Yes we can't go to Barry without thinking of Gavin and Stacey. I should do a Nessa inspired outfit some time ;)

  13. Another ripping 60s look. You pull them off so well.

Believe it or not, Bath has a Georgian Lido! They're currently trying to raise money to get Cleveland Pools restored. (http://clevelandpools.org.uk/Home/)

    1. Wow, that's beautiful! I do hope the restoration campaign is a success. Was it just used by a single sex at a time, or was it men only I wonder? I can imagine Georgian times had strict bathing rules!

  16. I remember swimming in the pool as a teenager, in the 70's. I don't remember what the architecture looked like - only that it was very cold! I love the outfit - the colour is gorgeous on you.
