November Purchases

So, did I get a bit spendy in the Black Friday sales?

Nope!  I didn't do any Black Friday shopping whatsoever.  I wasn't really that tempted to be honest, and the day was spent wallpapering instead.  A new skill for me, so it was an educational and cheap day's fun.  What I did buy in November was either off Ebay or from charity shops and car boot sales.

First up was this sweet vintage brooch, charity shop (£1).  Signed 'Sphinx', which I didn't know anything about until I read this on the Susan Caplan website: "Founded in Cheswick, England, Sphinx created costume jewellery of unparalleled quality. International fashion houses purchased and sold them as their own. Sphinx frequently did not sign their pieces so that they could be marked by said houses."

Fake Chloe bag, charity shop (£14.99).  I just love the lucite type handles.  Two leather bags, car boot sale (£2 each).  This is because I'm overhauling my bag collection and getting rid of the tiny bags that I never use because I can't fit my stuff in them.  I am a person who doesn't travel light.

Vintage Aubrey Segal jacket, car boot sale (£5), probably late '50s or early '60s.  There's a little fading on one sleeve, and I think half of the buttons have changed colour, but it's still a cute jacket so I couldn't leave it there.  The faux fur is very nice and glam, and the bracelet length sleeves are something I like in jackets.

And a bit of an Ebay splurge started with some Bertie black high heels (£15), new in box.  I already have these in gold (seen here).  They are super comfortable and I love the style.

Finally in November, I bought three Pretty Retro items off Ebay, all still new with tags.  The Pretty Retro pencil skirt in black pin stripe, the Pretty Retro black wiggle dress (that I already have in red and love, love, love!), and the Pretty Retro tea dress in a polkadot print (not pictured, same one as the Emerald print one I wore here).  I'm unsure about the pencil skirt.  The fit and fabric is very different from the pencil skirt I have from sister brand the House of Foxy, I think it's much less flattering and clings to my tummy rather than skims it.  So, that might be something I put back on Ebay.

I bought some nice non-clothing/accessory items this month too, so I'll share a few of those.

Two vintage '60s magazines caught my eye (£1 each from the car boot sale).  One is missing its cover, but the contents are fantastic, I will be sure to share some of the fashion spreads - and a fun quiz to see how hip you are!  Bargain of the month though has to be the Lady Rose Lion (Monkey Unicorn) perfume from the 4160 Tuesdays sale for a crazy price of £24.  I bought a sample on Mim's recommendation, and absolutely loved it, but at £90 a bottle I was waiting until they had a bottle on offer before taking the plunge.  They still have some sale items left in their 'naughty cupboard', so it might be worth a browse, though the perfume I bought seems to have increased in price to £48 which now makes me wonder if the bargain price I had was a mistake and some poor sales assistant has been sacked because of it?!  I hope not!

I love advent calendars, though not so much the chocolate ones.  I had one with pictures in as a child and it brought me endless delight.  So this year I bought myself two advent calendars.  The first is a Tea 24 tea advent calendar (£20 ish) via Kickstarter, but it's now available at Not on the High Street.  Lovely loose teas every day, what a treat.

I also bought the M&S beauty advent calendar (£35 when you spend £35, but now sold out sorry), which is brilliant value.  I bought one last year and was absolutely thrilled with it.  You get to try high-end beauty products that you wouldn't want to fork out for in case you didn't like it, and the beauty is (sorry, bad pun!) that if you don't think you'll use something, it would be a nice gift to pass on to a friend.

Things I bought and sent back:
I made my first online purchase from Beyond Retro in their sale.  As I expected from a mass vintage retailer, the sizing and description was off.  I don't want to lose more postage money so I have popped the couple of items on Ebay so that I at least have a chance of breaking even!

A good shopping month!

  2. The brooch is a great find. I have one or two similar brooches, will check if they're marked. I would have picked up that jacket too, if necessary you can always change the buttons. Love the shoes, and I'm sure that magazine will bring endless fun. I love looking through vintage magazines, and the ads can be quite entertaining as well. The M&S advent calender is a great idea! xxx

  4. That is a shame about the Beyond Retro purchases. You do take a risk when buying online.

I love the brooch and shoes.

That tea advent calendar is such a great idea and less calories than a chocolate one.

  5. That brooch is fantastic! Great find, especially given the price.
I feel like I didn't see anything that exciting for black Friday. I was really trying to spend money, but they made it so hard! I don't think you missed anything.

  8. Great haul, as always! I don't do Black Friday shopping, I've ever bought one thing on that day and that was only because I'd been keeping an eye on it and the price suddenly dropped. xx

  9. Gorgeous brooch no wonder you snapped that up! I did go a little mad with the black friday reductions I need to write a post!

  10. Ha, I am a dirty perfume pusher. But that price is so good, it would have been daft not to.

That Sphinx brooch is a corker. Turquoise and coral in gold both seem extremely 50s-70s to me, you just don't see them so much any more. They always look so summery. The jacket is splendid too.

I got two dresses in the black friday sales - both Monsoon - but that was my lot.
